《紅日》是一部紀實性的電影，它可以堪稱中國軍事文學創(chuàng)作歷史上的一座重要的里程碑。小說的作者吳強是參加過二打漣水、萊蕪、孟良崮等戰(zhàn)役的現(xiàn)場指揮員，時任華野六縱政治部宣傳部長。影片的故事描寫也是圍繞著六縱經(jīng)歷編寫的。
片子中著重描寫了六縱參加的三次戰(zhàn)役。從二打漣水開篇，此戰(zhàn)我軍被74師打敗，漣水丟失，王必成受到陳毅的嚴厲批評，差點撤職。因此，六縱恨死了74師，發(fā)誓要報仇。第二場萊蕪戰(zhàn)役，此戰(zhàn)我軍大勝，六縱也繳獲甚多，不過此戰(zhàn)74師沒有參加。最后是本片的重點孟良崮戰(zhàn)役
